AUTHORS INTERVIEW
What made you decide to write a book about online dating?
Cyndi: The reason why I decided to write about online dating was as I work from home it can be extremely isolating and lonely; meeting people online seemed like the perfect solution to remedy the situation and this would enable me to meet potential mates as well as friends. Some of my immediate friends and family thought it was a ridiculous idea so I decided once I started dating I would document my experience as it would help me not only to relate to the person better but also make it more personal...more real.
What was one of the most surprising things you learned in writing The Highs & Lows of Online Dating?
Cyndi: For me was the ability to fall in love with someone that I had never met, falling in love so quickly took me by surprise!
How much of the book is based on your own actual experience?
Cyndi: The majority of the book is based on my own experience....however I have changed names etc to protect people’s identity as well as dilute and add a bit a humour.
You describe in your book how addictive and time consuming online dating is. Do you think the amount of time invested in this activity pays off?
Cyndi: I think time spent on anything you are interested in can and will pay off...but you have to work at it and as you know nothing happens overnight. However, I do believe that once you wade through the jokers it’s possible to meet some very genuine people out there and also make good friends along the way.
What advice would you give to people considering online dating?
Cyndi: Go for it, but make sure you ask all the relevant questions needed to double check who you are speaking to, never send your personal email address, photographs or telephone number to anyone that you are not comfortable with. It’s very much the same as when you meet someone in a club or pub, be cautious and do your homework and follow your instinct then dive in and have lots of fun, it beats sitting alone at home with a bottle of wine!
Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?
Cyndi: I have always had a desire to write since I was a little girl and it’s never gone away, I love books and words and the art of putting them together to make a book is an incredible experience.
How did you become a writer?
Cyndi: I knew that I had to get it out of my system somehow so I just sat down and started typing!!
If you weren’t writing, what would you want to be doing for a living? What are some of your other passions in life?
Cyndi: I am in the business of health and nutrition and love anything to do with healthy living, so a dietician or maybe a Pilate’s instructor would be ideal.
